- With a classical education, I haven't felt confident enough to improvise in years.
- Name: Harriet Hildebrand Kjærnsrød
- My home is: Oslo
- I'm currently studying: Digital Jazz studies - DigJazz (euphonium)
I chose this study because:
With a classical education from the music conservatory and the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH), I haven't felt confident enough to improvise in years
I was looking for more tools to enhance my skills in jazz and improvisation so that I could become even more free in my playing and better guide students who want to play jazz.
The study also suited me because the classes are held on weekends, making it possible for me to travel to Stavanger, as I live in Oslo.
In addition to studies, I work as:
I teach at Bærum Cultural School, where I primarily instruct on euphonium, trombone, and my three regular ensembles. I have also a couple of students on alto horn and tuba. Additionally, I teach at St. Hallvard Upper Secondary School, in the music program located just outside Oslo.
Otherwise, I work as a freelance musician, educator, and conductor. I am also a member of the trio "Trio Fantastico" with Lena Rist-Larsen on accordion and Hedvig Holst on saxophone.
I practice for about 2-3 hours every day to stay updated and in shape for work and various engagements. It's crucial for me to remain an active performing musician as well.
For all these years, I have been a classical musician, but a new spark for jazz has been ignited in me .
This is my dream job:
I am lucky to have the opportunity for a diverse workday, teaching, performing as a musician, and conducting. I enjoy the variety, but I am considering focusing even more on the performing aspect after completing this study.
I am particularly passionate about creating and developing opportunities, elevating our level on the euphonium (brass) – whether it's for my students or my own development. For all these years, I have been a classical musician, but a new spark for jazz has been ignited in me. So, I dream of being more versatile and mastering the jazz genre better in the future.
How is the student environment and network during the study?
The environment among the students is very good. Great knowledge and generosity. Incredibly fun and very educational to get to know so many new great students and teachers. Stavanger is a wonderful place to study and a super cozy city.
These are my three best tips to the future students:
- Apply for the program and take the chance; this is a very good study with excellent and generous teachers. You will learn a lot.
- Work hard at, and between, the sessions. Take in all the tips and ideas from the teachers and students.
- Be curious, open and challenge yourself
