Career issues and management for dance artists (BDA840)

In the course, the student gets a good overview of the professional life it is about to enter. The student gets an insight into cultural management that lays the premises for work opportunities and during the course the student gets to meet relevant actors in dance and cultural life. In the course, the goal is to provide good tools in the creation of future working life, this may be application writing and reflection on one's own future artistry. A large part of the teaching is based on the individual student's reflection on their own values and knowledge and how this helps shape a future artistry. The student will gain a good insight into the performing arts field in Norway today. The lectures are theoretically and practically oriented, students discuss and reflect in groups and written assignments are given, individually and in groups.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • have knowledge and insight into Norwegian cultural policy.
  • Have knowledge and insight into challenges performers face in future professional life, this can be about ethics, balance of power and gender.
  • Reflect on their career choice based on values, interests and competences

Skills

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Use tools / methods related to entrepreneurship and be able to plan their work as a dance artist. Examples may be application writing and other things.

  • After completing the course, the student should be able to:
  • Have insight into their future field of work as a dance artist, including an overview of relevant art and cultural institutions and public administration bodies.

Portfolio assessment where 3-4 written and oral assignments are included, individually and in groups. The final assignment has a larger scope and is often carried out as a fieldwork where working life is included.Written assignments in the subject can be submitted in Norwegian or English. Swedish and Danish is also accepted.

Attendance in all organized teaching is mandatory in accordance with the UK Faculty’s attendance regulations.

Method of work

Arbeidslivskunnskap includes lectures, group work, discussion and field visits.

The lectures are theoretically and practically oriented, students discuss and reflect in groups. Written assignments are given, individually and in groups. Great emphasis is placed on the student's reflections on values, competences, and interests and how this helps define a future professional life. SKAPE, Balansekunstprosjektet, the trade union NODA and EMPLOY are examples of actors visiting the course.

The subject is organized as weekly teaching. However, the teaching activity can entirely or partly be organized as intensive modules in periods of the academic year. The subject can also have a combination of weekly teaching and intensive modules.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
