Content

At the beginning of the course, students will be exposed to the background information on unit systems, dimensional homogeneity, physical properties, pressure, temperature, composition etc. After this, students will delve into the several sub-topics of process engineering. Students will get acquainted with performing material balance calculations for processes involving single and multiple-unit operations with and without recycle, bypass streams. Students will apply the learning from Fluid & Thermodynamics to perform energy balance and overall mechanical energy balance on processes with and without reaction.

The course will introduce students to process diagrams, process simulation and methodologies for process assessment (TEA and LCA). At last, the course will cover the elements of sustainable process design. Examples from various industries (chemical, food, water treatment etc), current global challenges and process engineering approach of mitigation.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, students should be able to:

  • Apply the learning from general chemistry and Fluid- and Thermodynamics in engineering topics.
  • Understand basic principles and calculation techniques used in engineering,
  • Understand and make a process diagram
  • Formulate and perform the mass balance in single, multiple stages, and recycle process.
  • Formulate and perform energy balance on a process with and without chemical reaction
  • Define the problems, collect data, analyze the data and use appropriate formulations to solve the engineering problem.
  • Explain the common frame of reference in design and usage of software used for process simulation in the industry
  • Understand at the basic level the techno-economic analysis and life cycle analysis of the process.
  • Discuss the sustainability of process design at a fundamental level.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
